Lithium metal anode protective coatings are functional interfacial layers coated or formed in situ on the surface of lithium metal, lithiated current collectors, or anode-free battery current collectors. Common forms include artificial SEI layers, ion-conductive ceramic layers, polymer elastic layers, organic?inorganic composite layers, LiF-rich passivation layers, and lithiophilic nucleation layers. Their main functions are to reduce side reactions between lithium metal and electrolytes or solid-state electrolytes, regulate lithium-ion flux and deposition morphology, and suppress dendrites, dead lithium, and interfacial impedance growth. They are used in solid-state lithium metal batteries, lithium?sulfur batteries, high-energy-density drone batteries, and electric vehicle cells. The product's overall gross margin is approximately 40%.

Lithium metal anode protective coatings are still in the pilot introduction and early commercialization stage and should not be understood under the scope of ordinary industrial coatings. Demand mainly comes from interfacial stability issues in the commercialization of lithium metal anodes. Solid-state batteries, lithium?sulfur batteries, and high-power aviation/drone batteries have higher requirements for cycle life, safety, and thin lithium utilization, making artificial SEI and protective layers key auxiliary materials in the transition from laboratory research to roll-to-roll manufacturing.

The supply chain consists of three types of players: battery developers with protected lithium anode or full-cell structure know-how; equipment and process companies providing ALD, PVD, and roll-to-roll vacuum deposition; and material companies providing polymer, ceramic, carbon-based, and fluorine-rich interfacial materials.

In the short term, revenue will come more from samples, pilot lines, and custom development. Scale-up depends on solid-state battery yield, lithium foil/current collector treatment, and the cost of dry-room and vacuum processes. In the medium to long term, composite coatings that combine ultra-thin design, low impedance, dendrite resistance, and continuous manufacturing are more likely to enter mass-production procurement lists.
