Anhydride-based latent epoxy curing agents are heat-activated epoxy hardeners in which acid anhydride groups serve as the primary reactive functionality. They react slowly with epoxy resins at room temperature or low temperature and form highly crosslinked networks under heat or catalyzed curing conditions. Representative products include methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride, methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride, hexahydrophthalic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, nadic methyl anhydride, dodecenylsuccinic anhydride, aromatic anhydrides and polymeric anhydrides. These curing agents provide high thermal resistance, dimensional stability, electrical insulation, low exotherm, low shrinkage, optical clarity and long pot life in applications such as electronic encapsulation, electrical insulation, LED encapsulation, transformer casting, composites, powder coatings and high-performance adhesives.

Anhydride latent curing agents should be defined as anhydride-based latent epoxy curing agents rather than simply as ordinary liquid anhydrides or microencapsulated hardeners. The latency of anhydride curing systems mainly comes from their slow room-temperature reaction rate, long pot life and rapid crosslinking under heat or catalyzed conditions. Under a disciplined market scope, the category should include MHHPA, MTHPA, HHPA, THPA, NMA, METH, DDSA, aromatic solid anhydrides, polymeric anhydrides and precatalyzed anhydride hardeners.

From the supply perspective, the global market is served by dedicated anhydride producers in China, the United States, Japan and Europe. Puyang Huicheng is one of the clearest China-based producers of anhydrides and anhydride derivatives, with products used in electronic, electrical, encapsulation, LED and insulation applications. Dixie Chemical and Broadview Technologies are important U.S.-based suppliers of anhydride epoxy curing agents. New Japan Chemical is representative in liquid alicyclic anhydrides through the RIKACID series. Polynt, Huntsman and Mitsubishi Chemical are more relevant as European or global suppliers of branded anhydride hardeners and precatalyzed anhydride systems.

Demand is led by electrical insulation, electronic potting, semiconductor and LED encapsulation, transformer casting, composites, powder coatings and high-temperature adhesives. Compared with amine hardeners, anhydride systems are better suited for applications requiring long pot life, low exotherm, low shrinkage, electrical insulation, heat resistance, chemical resistance and optically clear cured materials.
