Compared with traditional metal-catalyzed hydrogenation, chemical reduction, or reductive amination processes, imine reductase operates under mild reaction conditions and offers high chemoselectivity and enantioselectivity, helping to reduce metal residues, side reactions, and resolution steps. It is particularly suitable for the green synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates, chiral amine building blocks, and high-value fine chemicals.

The upstream of imine reductase mainly includes microbial strain resources, enzyme gene sequences, expression vectors, fermentation media, cofactor recycling systems, immobilization carriers, and enzyme formulation excipients. The midstream involves enzyme screening, directed evolution, fermentation expression, purification, immobilization treatment, and process scale-up. Downstream applications are mainly concentrated in pharmaceutical biocatalysis, agrochemical intermediates, and specialty fine chemicals. In pharmaceutical and CDMO applications, imine reductase can be used for the preparation of chiral amines, heterocyclic amines, and API intermediates. In agrochemical and specialty fine chemical applications, it can be used for the synthesis of amine-containing structural fragments, functional amine compounds, and customized high-value intermediates.
