Hollow Sphere Pigment refers to a class of synthetic pigments/opacifiers made of particles with an internal void (air-filled ?hollow/voided? structure)?most commonly styrene-acrylic polymer hollow/voided latex particles supplied as an aqueous dispersion. The encapsulated void creates a strong refractive-index contrast (air vs. shell), enhancing light scattering, so HSP is widely used as a TiO? extender/opacifier in coatings, paper coatings, inks, and some home/personal care formulations.
Hollow sphere pigments are growing because they directly answer two persistent needs in coatings and paper: reduce TiO? usage while keeping hiding/whiteness, and improve formulation economics without sacrificing performance. Mainstream products are explicitly positioned as voided/hollow polymer opacifiers that can partially replace TiO? in architectural paints and boost opacity in paper/paperboard coatings, so adoption rises whenever formulators are under cost pressure and sustainability scrutiny.
The hard part is that HSP performance is formulation-window sensitive: real gains depend on pigment-volume concentration, pigment spacing, binder/latex compatibility, shear history, and waterborne additive packages.
