High-carbon ferrochrome is a ferrochrome alloy with a high carbon content (typically 6?8%) and a chromium content generally between 60?70%. It is produced by carbon reduction of chromium ore in an electric arc furnace and is the most produced and widely used type of ferrochrome. It is mainly used in stainless steel manufacturing, especially 300 series austenitic stainless steel, providing the steel with the necessary chromium to enhance corrosion resistance and hardness. It is also used in some cast steels and wear-resistant steels. The average price of this product is approximately US$922 per ton, with global sales of approximately 16.2 million tons.
The ferrochrome market is closely dependent on upstream chromium ore resources and downstream stainless steel demand. Upstream, chromium ore is mainly concentrated in South Africa (accounting for approximately 70% of global reserves), Kazakhstan, and India, resulting in high resource concentration and price fluctuations significantly influenced by geopolitical and environmental policies. Downstream, global stainless steel production continues to grow, particularly driven by infrastructure and manufacturing expansion in China, India, and Southeast Asia, which has fueled stable growth in ferrochrome demand. Looking ahead, with the development of green smelting technologies, low-carbon ferrochrome processes, and recycling, the ferrochrome industry will evolve towards higher purity, lower energy consumption, and greater environmental friendliness. The supply chain will also place greater emphasis on resource sustainability and regional diversification. High-carbon ferrochrome will remain the 'mainstay' of the global stainless steel industry, especially in countries like China, India, and Indonesia where stainless steel production capacity is rapidly expanding, with demand remaining rigid.
