Heptaldehyde, also known as n-heptanal, is a colorless or slightly yellowish oily liquid with a strong fruity and fatty aroma. As a saturated straight-chain fatty aldehyde, it is mainly used in the synthesis of fragrances (such as jasmine aldehyde) and pharmaceuticals. It is present in various essential oils and is also obtained from the cracking of castor oil.

The upstream segment primarily relies on bio-based raw materials and petrochemicals. The core raw material is castor oil, which is processed through high-temperature cracking to produce heptanal and undecylenic acid. This is currently the main industrial production route, therefore, the cultivation and processing of castor seeds directly determine the cost of raw materials. In addition, the petrochemical route, through the carbonylation of 1-hexene, serves as a supplementary source.
Global sales are projected to be approximately 1000 tons in 2025, with an average market price of approximately US$2590 per ton. The industry's gross profit margin is in the range of 15%-25%.

The main drivers of the current industry stem from the continuous demand for specific flavors and fragrances from the downstream fragrance and daily chemical industries, as well as the irreplaceable role of heptanal as a key intermediate in the synthesis of other high-value-added chemicals (such as alcohols, acids, and esters). With the increasing global demand for sustainable chemicals, particularly bio-based heptanal derived from castor oil, its substitution effect in high-end fragrances (such as jasmine aldehyde synthesis) and specialty lubricants is becoming increasingly significant.
