Flame Retardant Foam refers to a functional foam material based on polymer matrices such as polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, which are foamed into open-cell, closed-cell or semi-closed-cell porous structures and modified with additive, reactive or surface-treatment flame-retardant systems to delay ignition, reduce flame spread, lower heat release and improve smoke performance. It is commonly supplied as sheets, rolls, boards, blocks, molded parts, adhesive-backed foam or spray foam, and may be flexible, semi-rigid or rigid. Its structure is lightweight and porous, with compressibility, cushioning, thermal insulation or sealing performance depending on the material system. Key production requirements include stable foaming ratio, uniform cell morphology, effective dispersion or chemical bonding of flame retardants, retention of mechanical properties, thermal stability, smoke and toxicity control, dimensional stability, and compliance with flammability standards such as UL 94, FMVSS 302, FAR 25.853 and EN 13501. Flame Retardant Foam is mainly used in building and insulation, transportation, electrical and electronics, home and furniture, packaging and protection, with other applications including medical, military, acoustic, sealing and industrial cushioning materials.

The market opportunities for Flame Retardant Foam are mainly driven by stricter safety requirements, building energy-efficiency upgrades, transportation lightweighting, and rising safety demand in electrical and electronics applications. Building insulation, cold-chain facilities, industrial pipelines, and sandwich panels require materials that combine thermal insulation, low weight, and flame-retardant performance. Downstream demand is expected to show structural growth and application differentiation. Building and insulation will remain a core demand base, but the focus will move toward system-level fire performance, energy efficiency, and long-term dimensional stability. Transportation will place more emphasis on lightweighting, acoustic performance, low smoke and toxicity, and passenger safety.
