Expansion alloy refers to a family of iron-nickel (with or without cobalt/chromium/manganese) precision alloys engineered so that their linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is either extremely low or closely ?matched? to adjoining materials. Practically, the portfolio spans (i) low-expansion Fe-Ni grades such as Invar 36 (UNS K93600) for ultra-stable dimensions; (ii) controlled-expansion Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-Co grades such as Alloy 42 (UNS K94100) and Kovar/ASTM F15 (UNS K94610) designed to match borosilicate glass or alumina; and (iii) high-expansion Fe-Ni-Cr or Fe-Ni-Mn grades (e.g., 22-3) used as the ?active? layer in thermostatic bimetals. Typical product forms are cold-rolled strip/foil, wire, bar and plate, produced via vacuum melting to meet tight chemistry/cleanness and CTE windows.

Supply chain & buyer behavior. Upstream, producers source high-purity nickel (plus cobalt/chromium/manganese where applicable) and melt under vacuum to achieve reproducible CTE and low gas/trace-impurity levels; downstream, material is delivered mainly as precision strip/foil and fine wire for stamping, deep drawing, welding and brazing.
