Ethylene Carbonate (usually shortened to EC) is a cyclic carbonate solvent with the formula C?H?O? (often written as (CH?O)?CO). At room temperature it is often a colorless, almost odorless crystalline solid, and it melts around the mid-30 ?C range into a colorless liquid. Public chemical references describe it as a colorless liquid or crystalline solid and identify it with CAS 96-49-1. Because EC is polar, it can dissolve many salts and polar compounds. That one property?high polarity?explains a lot of why EC is valuable: it is a strong solvent for ions, which is exactly what you want in electrolytes and some specialty formulations.
From a market-definition point of view, the Ethylene Carbonate market includes EC sold as a chemical product across different purity levels and use cases. The market is usually split by grade, because different uses require very different impurity control. For example, ?battery grade? EC is sold with extremely tight impurity limits such as very low water and low acid content.
