Crosslinked insulation materials for power cables refer to polymeric insulation materials used as the main insulation layer of power cables, forming a three-dimensional network structure through chemical or physical crosslinking. The core products include peroxide-crosslinked XLPE insulation compounds and silane-crosslinked XLPE insulation compounds, together with EPR/EPDM crosslinked rubber insulation materials and a smaller share of irradiation-crosslinked polyolefin insulation materials. Key upstream inputs include high-purity LDPE/PE resin, LLDPE, POE, EPR/EPDM rubber, peroxide crosslinking agents, silane coupling agents, antioxidants, tree-retardant additives, stabilizers, processing aids, clean packaging and compounding equipment. Downstream applications include LV distribution cables, MV power distribution cables, HV/EHV transmission cables, urban underground cables, wind/solar collection cables, submarine cables, HVDC cables, and specialty mining, marine and industrial power cables.

In 2025, global crosslinked insulation materials for power cables production reached approximately 1 million tons, with an average global market price is $2,000 per ton.

From a global industry perspective, crosslinked insulation materials have become core base materials for modern extruded power cables, serving distribution networks, transmission lines, urban underground cables, renewable grid connection, offshore wind export, industrial power supply, rail transit and data centers. Compared with conventional thermoplastic insulation materials, crosslinked insulation offers stronger long-term operating-temperature capability, thermal-deformation stability, mechanical strength, dielectric performance and environmental aging resistance, allowing cables to operate under high loads, thermal cycling and complex installation conditions.

In terms of industry trends, crosslinked insulation materials for power cables are moving toward higher cleanliness, lower defect levels, stable crosslinking, lower by-products, stronger water-tree resistance, stronger electrical-tree resistance, longer service life, wider processing windows and DC-specific formulations. MV cable materials focus more on processability, crosslinking efficiency, hot-set performance and cost efficiency, while HV and EHV materials place much stronger emphasis on controlling contaminants, gels, metallic particles, moisture, scorch marks and interface defects, because micro-defects can initiate partial discharge, electrical treeing, water treeing and insulation breakdown. As cable manufacturing upgrades toward triple-layer co-extrusion, dry curing, closed material handling, clean feeding, inline defect inspection and optimized degassing, material competition is also shifting from dielectric strength alone toward clean manufacturing, batch stability, long-term electro-thermal aging, crosslinking by-product control and compatibility with cable-system qualification. For HVDC cables, crosslinked insulation materials must also control DC conductivity, space-charge accumulation, electric-field distortion under temperature gradients and polarity-reversal behavior.

The main growth drivers come from three areas. First, global grid expansion, distribution-network renewal, urban underground cabling, renewable grid connection, offshore wind export and industrial electrification are increasing demand for stable and reliable crosslinked insulation materials; the IEA warns that grids may become a bottleneck for clean energy transitions and electricity security if they are not upgraded fast enough, while large volumes of renewable projects are waiting in connection queues. Second, utilities and cable manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on lifecycle reliability, so material selection is shifting from purchase cost alone toward broader evaluation of breakdown risk, partial-discharge control, thermal-aging life, water-tree resistance, degassing efficiency and operating track record. Third, power cables are moving toward higher voltage classes, larger conductor sizes, longer delivery lengths, more complex land and submarine installation environments and stricter quality certification, pushing crosslinked insulation materials from general-purpose grades toward cleaner, more specialized, low-defect, traceable and highly consistent systems.
