Copper-phosphorus master alloy (CuP alloy) is a pre-alloyed intermediate product with copper as the base material and phosphorus as the main additive element. The phosphorus content is typically between 8% and 15% (common grades include CuP8, CuP10, CuP14, CuP15, etc.), with the balance being copper and trace impurities. It is an important metallurgical additive used to safely and efficiently introduce phosphorus during the smelting of copper and copper alloys.
Because pure phosphorus has an extremely low melting point (44.1?) and boiling point (280?), directly adding it to molten copper would cause violent boiling, splashing, and significant oxidation losses, and poses safety risks. Therefore, it must be used in the form of an intermediate alloy.
The main raw materials for copper-phosphorus master alloys include electrolytic copper (or high-purity cathode copper) and red phosphorus. They are smelted in a medium-frequency induction furnace and produced by pressing phosphorus into the molten copper using an advanced 'phosphorus injection process.' Because red phosphorus is highly flammable in air (ignition point approximately 260?C), the production process requires strict inert gas protection, placing high demands on equipment sealing and process control, which constitutes a significant technological barrier.
From a cost structure perspective, electrolytic copper accounts for a dominant position in the total cost (usually exceeding 80%), as copper is both the base material and the core value. While the cost of phosphorus raw materials is relatively low, its price fluctuations and supply stability significantly impact production continuity.
