It is commonly produced from braided yarn systems and treated with lubricants or blocking agents, and it is also offered as engineered ring sets that combine different ring types to achieve stable sealing performance in demanding services. Compression packing for vacuums typically costs between $10,000 and $20,000 per ton, with industry profit margins ranging from 35% to 55%.
Upstream, the supply chain starts with raw sealing media and additives such as graphite, aramid fibers, and PTFE based yarn systems, plus impregnation agents, lubricants, and anti extrusion reinforcements, which are converted by packing manufacturers through braiding, forming, densification, and impregnation processes, then cut into rings or assembled into application specific packing sets with quality control and, in some cases, low leakage certification aimed at fugitive emissions service. Downstream, products flow mainly through industrial distribution and sealing specialists as well as direct sales to valve makers for original equipment, and the largest end users are process industries that run large valve populations and high uptime requirements, where packing is purchased as a recurring maintenance item and increasingly standardized by site specifications and environmental compliance programs.
