BPhen, also known as bathophenanthroline or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, is a phenanthroline-based organic semiconductor molecule with CAS No. 1662-01-7 and the molecular formula C24H16N2. It is commonly used in OLEDs, organic electronic devices and perovskite solar cells as an electron transport material, hole-blocking material, exciton-blocking interlayer or electron-injection interface modifier. It is also used as a phenanthroline ligand in analytical and coordination chemistry. Commercially, BPhen is supplied as high-purity powder, sublimation-purified OLED-grade material, research-grade reagent or customer-specific material, with quality requirements focusing on purity, sublimation grade, thermal stability, batch consistency, trace metal control and device compatibility.

According to our research, BPhen is a niche but important organic semiconductor material used primarily as an electron transport, hole-blocking, exciton-blocking or electron-injection interface material in OLEDs and related organic optoelectronic devices. It should not be treated as a bulk chemical or as a proxy for the entire OLED materials market. Its commercial demand is concentrated in OLED device R&D, pilot qualification, small-scale commercial material supply, perovskite and organic photovoltaic interface research, and research-grade chemical supply. The material also retains a secondary non-OLED role as a phenanthroline ligand and analytical reagent, which must be separated from the OLED-grade market when estimating demand.

From the supply side, the visible BPhen supplier base is fragmented and includes dedicated OLED material suppliers, high-purity research chemical companies, sublimation-grade material vendors, custom synthesis providers and distributors. Lumtec and TCI have some of the clearest official BPhen product evidence, including sublimed and unsublimed grades. Sigma-Aldrich and Ossila provide strong research-grade and OLED-oriented supply channels, while Noctiluca, BLD, Synthonix, Strem, MSE Supplies and several Chinese B2B suppliers form the extended supplier pool. However, not all CAS-listed suppliers should be treated as true bulk manufacturers; many are better classified as catalog suppliers, repackagers, distributors or small-pack research chemical vendors.

From a product-positioning perspective, the key differentiation is shifting from basic purity to OLED-relevant quality control. Standard reagent-grade BPhen may be sufficient for analytical or early-stage research, while OLED device work often requires sublimation-purified material, consistent thermal behavior, low residual impurities, trace metal control and reliable batch-to-batch performance. Premium customers may also require customized COA, multiple sublimation, special packaging and kilogram-scale consistency. This creates a wide price gap between standard reagent-grade product, high-purity research grade, sublimed OLED grade and customer-specific premium supply.

Looking ahead, BPhen is expected to maintain stable demand as a classic ETL / HBL material and reference compound, but long-term growth will be moderated by proprietary electron transport materials, optimized cathode interface materials and panel-maker-specific device stacks. Suppliers with in-house synthesis, sublimation purification, analytical testing, device-grade quality control and customer qualification support will be better positioned than pure distributors. For market sizing, BPhen should be modeled as a narrow single-material market, not as a broad OLED electron transport materials market.
