Biomass hard carbon anode materials are non-graphitizable carbon powders produced from biomass precursors such as coconut shells, nut shells, rice husks, bamboo, starch, sugars, straw, or lignin, through pretreatment, carbonization, high-temperature treatment, milling and grading, and surface modification. They serve primarily as active materials for sodium-ion battery anodes, and to a lesser extent for lithium-ion fast-charging anodes and hybrid capacitor electrodes. The estimated gross margin is approximately 42%.

The demand for biomass hard carbon anode materials is driven by the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries. As sodium-ion batteries scale in energy storage, two-wheelers, low-speed vehicles, and low-temperature applications, hard carbon is moving from R&D samples to kiloton- and ten-kiloton-scale line validations. Compared with graphite, hard carbon is better suited for sodium storage; compared with resin-based routes, biomass-derived routes offer advantages in raw material cost, carbon footprint, and scalable supply. Precursors like coconut shells, nut shells, straw, bamboo, starch, and others are actively being developed. Current procurement focuses on specific capacity, initial Coulombic efficiency, tap density, particle size distribution, ash/metal impurities, and batch consistency; low price alone is insufficient to enter mainstream cell supply.

The market in 2025?2026 remains in a transitional phase from small-batch introduction to volume validation. Pricing is influenced by both high-end imported materials and domestic scaling, with unit prices expected to continue declining. However, pretreatment of biomass, closed-pore structure control, and surface modification remain technical barriers. From 2026 onward, as leading battery manufacturers secure sodium-ion storage orders, hard carbon demand is expected to grow faster than traditional lithium-ion anodes. Products will be tiered by capacity, initial efficiency, rate capability, tap density, and customer validation cycle, with leading manufacturers leveraging stable raw material sources and ten-thousand-ton-scale production lines to form a competitive advantage.
