These materials are flexible, cuttable, or compressible, and are designed to delay the propagation of thermal runaway from an individual cell to adjacent cells, modules, and pack covers through a combination of low thermal conductivity, high-temperature resistance, electrical insulation, heat absorption and expansion, or flame-retardant laminated structures. Demand for these materials is being driven by the increasing energy density, fast-charging capability, and higher integration levels of power battery packs, making them a standard element of battery safety design rather than an optional protective component. As the spacing between cells continues to shrink, procurement priorities are shifting toward achieving higher thermal insulation performance, fire integrity, electrical insulation, compression recovery, and low particle shedding within thinner material profiles. Aerogel pads and silicone foam composite pads are well suited for combining thermal protection with compression management, while mica- and ceramic-fiber-based materials continue to offer advantages in cost and temperature resistance for pack covers, module partitions, and venting pathways.
