They primarily function via intumescent carbon layers, ceramicized silicone layers, ceramic thermal barriers, or flame-retardant insulating layers to delay the spread of thermal runaway flames, heat, ejected particles, and arcs to the passenger cabin, adjacent cells, or external structures. Estimated gross margin is approximately 42%.

These coatings are transitioning from supplemental safety materials to standard protective layers within battery pack platform design. Higher energy-density cells, faster charging rates, and compressed CTP/CTB structures reduce cell spacing and increase the demand for cover plates, trays, and module separators to withstand thermal shocks, flame exposure, and particle impact. Buyers now assess coatings not only by temperature resistance but also by thickness, area weight, expansion ratio or ceramicization integrity, dielectric strength, adhesion, electrolyte resistance, and compatibility with automated assembly processes.

Future growth will be driven by the adoption of high-end electric vehicle battery pack platforms into mainstream vehicles and the emphasis on thermal runaway testing in energy storage systems. Intumescent epoxy and polyurethane coatings remain suitable for large-area cover plate and housing fire protection, whereas ceramicized silicone and ceramic thermal barrier coatings are better suited for low-expansion, anti-explosion, and complex substrate applications.

Due to the need for full-pack thermal diffusion tests, UL 94, UL 2596, or OEM-specific fire tests, the onboarding cycle is long, giving suppliers who have achieved platform certification strong pricing power.
