Aerogel battery insulation pads are thermal protection components for batteries, made from silica aerogel composite felts, pre-oxidized fibers, glass fibers, or ceramic fibers, combined with PET, PI, flame-retardant coatings, foam, or rubber frames. They are primarily placed between cells, between modules, and at critical points in battery packs. Key features include low thermal conductivity, thin and lightweight structure, flame retardancy, electrical insulation, and some compressive cushioning, designed to reduce heat propagation to adjacent cells during single-cell thermal runaway while accommodating assembly space, cyclic expansion cushioning, and overall system safety. Estimated gross margin is approximately 40%-45%.

Market demand is driven by thermal safety requirements for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. As power battery designs evolve toward larger cells, CTP/CTC, and highly integrated structures, the space available for insulation materials shrinks, but consistency in thermal runaway blocking, flame retardancy, electrical insulation, and compression rebound becomes more critical. Aerogel composite pads are thus transitioning from optional components to core passive safety elements in high-safety battery packs.

China remains the primary demand and manufacturing region, while North American, European, and South Korean customers emphasize long-term compressive thermal resistance, humidity-heat reliability, and standard verification. Industry competition is shifting from simply optimizing thermal conductivity to encompassing material systems, packaging processes, die-cutting precision, dust control, automated placement, and supply stability. Leading companies increase customer stickiness through co-development with battery and vehicle manufacturers.

Pricing is expected to decline as production capacity and supply of silica, fibers, and films mature, but high-grade fire-resistant, low-thickness, low-dust, and custom compression-curve products will continue to command higher margins.
