Thermal grafting is the most mainstream bulk grafting process in industry for preparing maleic anhydride-grafted polybutadiene (MLPB). It specifically refers to the technical route of achieving free radical grafting of maleic anhydride and polybutadiene through high-temperature thermal initiation under solvent-free and peroxide-initiator-free conditions.

The main raw materials for thermally grafted MLPB are polybutadiene (PB) and maleic anhydride (MAH). PB is typically a liquid oligomer (molecular weight 1000-10000 g/mol) prepared using Ziegler-Natta or lithium-based catalysts, accounting for 60-80 wt%, while MAH accounts for 5-40 wt%. Antioxidants (such as antioxidant 264/2246) and anti-gelling agents (such as acetanilide and p-phenylenediamine) are added to suppress cross-linking side reactions at high temperatures. In terms of cost structure, PB monomer (butadiene) accounts for approximately 50-60% of the production cost, while maleic anhydride (approximately 15-20%) and heat-stabilizing agents account for a smaller proportion. Due to the solvent-free bulk process, the solvent recovery and treatment costs of solution methods are eliminated, and peroxide initiators are not required, resulting in a lower overall production cost compared to solution grafting. However, the energy consumption at high temperatures (180-220°C) and the investment in process stability due to anti-gelling control are the main cost drivers.
