Polymethacrylimide foam is a rigid, closed-cell, high-temperature structural foam core used in sandwich composites, valued for very high specific stiffness/strength, low resin uptake (fine cell), good fatigue performance, and thermal stability for processes like prepreg/autoclave, RTM and infusion (depending on grade).

Upstream, PMI foam relies on methacrylate-/acrylic-value-chain monomers and specialty additives plus utilities/energy and packaging; midstream, producers polymerize and foam PMI into closed-cell blocks/sheets, then machine, slit, groove/perforate, surface-treat and qualify materials (including aerospace documentation) before distributing through direct key-account sales and composite-material distributors; downstream, PMI is converted into sandwich panels by prepreg/autoclave, RTM/VARTM/infusion or bonding processes and is finally assembled into aircraft interiors and secondary structures, rotor/radome components, premium automotive and motorsport parts, selective wind blade elements, marine performance panels, sports equipment, and certain radiolucent medical table structures.

PMI foam is typically made by forming a precursor copolymer/thermoplastic resin, incorporating foaming agents and process aids, then executing controlled expansion and imidization/crosslinking in heated molds/ovens to create a uniform, fine closed-cell structure; after foaming, blocks are post-cured/heat-treated to reach target thermal/mechanical properties, conditioned to stabilize dimensions, and cut into sheets with tight thickness tolerances; value-added steps include CNC shaping, kerfing/grooving/perforation to improve resin flow in infusion, surface preparation for adhesive bonding, and extensive QC (density, compressive/shear properties, heat distortion, cell uniformity) with aerospace-grade traceability where required.
