Global sales of initiator-grafted maleic anhydride-grafted polybutadiene (MLPB) reached 8,414 tons in 2025, with an average price of US$10,263 per ton.

Initiator-grafted MLPB is a functional modification method that uses exogenous free radical initiators to generate primary free radicals, which then initiate dehydrogenation or double bond addition on the polybutadiene chain, forming macromolecular free radicals that react with maleic anhydride monomers, ultimately introducing succinic anhydride side groups into the PB backbone.

The main raw materials for initiator-grafted MLPB include polybutadiene (liquid phase, 60-80 wt%), maleic anhydride (5-40 wt%), and free radical initiators (0.1-0.5 wt%, such as DCP, BPO, AIBN, etc.). The solution method requires the addition of solvents such as xylene and white oil (the amount used is 1-2 times the total mass of the reactants) and subsequent recycling and treatment costs. The melt method requires the addition of anti-gelling agents (antioxidant 1010, etc., 0.1-0.3 wt%) to inhibit high-temperature crosslinking. In terms of cost structure, polybutadiene still accounts for 50-60% of raw material costs. Although the initiator is used in very small quantities (<0.5%), its high unit price (peroxide approximately 30-80 RMB/kg) accounts for about 5-10% of the raw material cost. Solvent recovery and purification costs make the total cost of solution processing higher than that of melt processing. Compared with thermal grafting, initiator grafting increases initiator expenditure, but the reaction temperature is significantly lower (80-190°C vs 180-240°C), saving 15-25% of energy consumption. Furthermore, melt extrusion allows for solvent-free continuous production. The overall processing cost is generally lower than solution processing but slightly higher than thermal grafting.
