Cu paste is a printable or dispensable composite material in which copper powder is dispersed in an organic vehicle (binder + solvent + additives), and in thick-film systems may also include glass frit and functional oxides to promote adhesion and sintering. After printing/dispensing and drying, the paste is cured/fired/sintered to form electrically and/or thermally conductive copper features.

Upstream starts with copper feedstocks (cathode copper or copper salts) and powder production. Copper powder can be produced by atomization, electrolysis, hydrometallurgy, and solid-state reduction, each yielding different particle size, shape, and surface condition. The powder is then classified/milled and often surface-engineered (e.g., passivation or coatings) to mitigate copper oxidation—an important issue for paste stability and low-temperature sintering/printing performance.

Downstream, Cu pastes are widely used to build thick printed copper circuits on ceramic power substrates (e.g., alumina/AlN) via screen printing followed by drying and nitrogen firing, and Cu pastes/powders are also used in sintered die-attach/interconnect for power modules (including SiC devices) to achieve high thermal/electrical performance. In addition, copper powders (often flake-type or surface-treated) are used in printed electronics and in emerging PV metallization routes using screen-printable Cu-based pastes/seed layers.
