Marine methanol fuel refers to methanol-based liquid fuel used in ship main engines, auxiliary engines, boilers, or dual-fuel marine engines. Marine methanol can be produced from fossil feedstocks such as natural gas and coal, or from low-carbon and renewable routes such as biomass, municipal waste, renewable hydrogen, and captured carbon dioxide. With the growth of methanol dual-fuel vessel orders, port bunkering infrastructure, and international emission-reduction regulations, marine methanol fuel is moving from pilot use toward commercial adoption. ISO 6583:2024 has been established as the general requirements and specification standard for methanol as a marine fuel, classifying marine methanol into MMA, MMB, and MMC grades.

The upstream supply chain of marine methanol fuel includes natural gas, coal, biomass, municipal solid waste, industrial off-gas, renewable electricity, green hydrogen, captured carbon dioxide, catalysts, methanol synthesis units, storage tanks, fuel additives, and hazardous-chemical transportation equipment. Feedstock source and carbon intensity determine the fuel?s emission-reduction value and cost level.
