At the start of 2016, the Mexican peso hit its lowest value against the US dollar since 1981, with an exchange rate of Mx$19 per US dollar. Although the exchange rate during the first quarter of the year returned to a more stable value, devaluation had a direct effect on many imported goods, the prices of which were adjusted during the year to compensate for the difference.
