About Waters Corp.

Waters Corporation operates as an analytical instrument manufacturer primarily in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Asia. The company also develops and supplies software-based products that interface with its instruments, as well as other manufacturers’ instruments.

Segments

The company operates through two segments: Waters Division and TA Division.

WATERS DIVISION

The Waters division designs, manufactures, sells, and services high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC and together with HPLC, referred to as LC), and mass spectrometry (MS) instrument systems and support products, including chromatography columns, other consumable products, and post-warranty service plans. These systems are complementary products that can be integrated together and used along with other analytical instruments.

High Performance and Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography

HPLC is the standard technique used to identify and analyze the constituent components of various chemicals and other materials. HPLC is used to analyze substances in various industries for research and development purposes, quality control, and process engineering applications. The primary end-use markets for HPLC are those served by the pharmaceutical and life science industries. In these markets, HPLC is used to identify new drugs, develop manufacturing methods, and assure the potency and purity of new pharmaceuticals. HPLC is also used in other applications, such as analyses of foods and beverages for nutritional labeling and compliance with safety regulations, the testing of water and air purity within the environmental testing industry, as well as applications in other industries, such as chemical and consumer products. HPLC is also used by universities, research institutions, and government agencies, such as the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their international counterparts who mandate testing requiring HPLC instrumentation.

The company has introduced ultra performance liquid chromatography that utilizes a packing material with small, uniform diameter particles and a specialized instrument, the ACQUITY UPLC, to accommodate the pressure and narrow chromatographic bands that are generated by these small particles.

The company manufactures LC instruments that are offered in configurations that allow for varying degrees of automation, from component configured systems for academic research applications to automated systems for regulated testing, and that have various detection technologies, from ultra-violet (UV) absorbance to MS, optimized for certain analyses. The company also manufactures tailored LC systems for the analysis of biologics, as well as an LC detector utilizing evaporative light scattering technology to expand the usage of LC to compounds that are not amenable to UV absorbance detection. The primary consumable products for LC are chromatography columns. These columns are packed with separation media used in the LC testing process and are replaced at regular intervals.

In February 2009, the company acquired the remaining capital stock of Thar Instruments, Inc. (Thar), which engages in the design, development, and manufacture of analytical and preparative supercritical fluid chromatography and supercritical fluid extraction (SFC) systems. In 2008, it acquired the net assets of Analytical Products Group, Inc. (APG), a provider of environmental testing products for quality control and proficiency testing used in environmental laboratories. The APG business has been integrated into the company’s Environmental Resources Associates, Inc. (ERA) business. ERA provides environmental testing products for quality control, proficiency testing and specialty calibration chemicals used in environmental laboratories. ERA also provides product support services required to help laboratories with their federal and state mandated accreditation requirements or with quality control over critical pharmaceutical analysis. The company’s test kits provide quantitative detection of particular mycotoxins through the choice

Enhanced SWOT Analysis

Enhanced SWOT is a 3×3 grid that arranges strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats into one scheme:

  • How to use the strengths to take advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to use the strengths to reduce likelihood and impact of the threats?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that obstruct taking advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that can make the threats a reality?

Upon answering these questions a company can develop a project plan to improve its business performance.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL (also termed as PESTLE) is an ideal tool to strategically analyze what influence different outside factors – political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal – exert on a business to later chart its long term targets.

Being part of the external analysis when carrying out a strategic assessment or performing a market study, PESTEL gives an overview of diverse macro-environmental factors that any company should thoughtfully consider. By perceiving these outside environments, businesses can maximally benefit from the opportunities while minimizing the threats to the organization.

Key Factors Examined by PESTEL Analysis:

  • Political – What opportunities and pressures are brought by political bodies and what is the degree of public regulations’ impact on the business?
  • Economic – What economic policies, trends and structures are expected to affect the organization, what is this influence’s degree?
  • Sociological – What cultural and societal aspects will work upon the demand for the business’s products and operations?
  • Technological – What impact do the technological aspects, innovations, incentives and barriers have on the organization?
  • Environmental – What environmental and ecological facets, both locally and farther afield, are likely to predetermine the business?
  • Legal – What laws and legislation will exert influence on the style the business is carried out?

IFE, EFE, IE Matrices

The Internal Factor Evaluation matrix (IFE matrix) is a strategic management tool helping audit or evaluate major weaknesses and strengths in a business’s functional areas. In addition, IFE matrix serves as a basis for identifying and assessing relationships amongst those areas. The IFE matrix is utilised in strategy formulation.

The External Factor Evaluation matrix (EFE matrix) is a tool of strategic management that is typically utilised to assess current market conditions. It is an ideal instrument for visualising and prioritising the threats and opportunities a firm is facing.

The essential difference between the above mentioned matrices lies in the type of factors incorporated in the model; whilst the latter is engaged in internal factors, the former deals exceptionally with external factors – those exposed to social, political, economic, legal, etc. external forces.

Being a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models, the Internal External matrix (IE matrix) rests upon an investigation of external and internal business factors integrated into one suggestive model.

  3. What is the intensity of competitive rivalry?

  5. How significant is the bargaining power of suppliers?
