U.S. Market for Tamper Evident Caps for IV & Oral Syringes
In 2012, it expected there were be over 40 million tamper evident caps sold in the U.S., an increase of over the previous year. This market is being driven by the growth in the plastic and glass prefilled syringes segment and by the increased penetration of tamper evident devices for these prefilled syringes.
For plastic prefilled syringes, the majority of them are filled with either saline or heparin, and because these solution are not caustic or controlled substances, it is unlikely that they will use any type of tamper evident device because it is not cost effective. However, the remaining 1% of the plastic prefilled syringes that contain vaccines, cough medicine and pain relief medication may use a tamper evident device, and tamper evident caps have the potential to increase their penetration rate in that subsegment. Glass prefilled syringes are almost exclusively filled with drugs instead of heparin or flushing solutions, and while the penetration rate for tamper evident caps for glass prefilled syringes is relatively low, there is great potential for all types of tamper evident devices to increase their use with glass prefilled syringes.
