The use of arthroscopy for knee repair procedures is becoming increasingly common. The most frequent knee repair surgeries that employ use of an arthroscope are microfracture, debridement, meniscal repair and ACL/PCL reconstruction procedures.

Due to the relatively low cost of microfracture and arthroscopy as compared to other more involved orthopedic knee procedures such as ACL/PCL reconstruction or total knee replacement, most people in Europe are able to afford these procedure costs. However, some countries have a disproportionately lower number of orthopedic surgeons and centers accessible to them than others. Additionally, in some cultures, these elective procedures are not as popular such as in Portugal and Spain. Furthermore, there is a higher demand for these procedures in countries with very active skiing cultures like Switzerland and Austria than in others like Spain. Thus, several factors contribute to the frequency of microfracture and arthroscopy procedures performed in each country.
