Geography Covered
Retinoic Acid Receptor (RARs) Agonist: Overview
Retinoic acid receptors (RARs) are nuclear hormone receptors of the NR1B class, which function as heterodimers with retinoid X receptors (RXRs). The retinoic acid receptors (RAR?, RAR?, and RAR?) are members of the nuclear receptor superfamily. Compounds which bind to and activate the RARs are termed retinoids and comprise both natural retinol (Vitamin A) metabolites and synthetic analogs. Upon binding of an agonist ligands to RAR results in dissociation of corepressor and recruitment of coactivator protein that, promotes transcription of the downstream target gene into mRNA and eventually protein. Several Retinoic Acid Receptors (RAR) agonists have therapeutic activity against a variety of cancer types. RAR agonists presenting novel structural and chemical features could therefore open new avenues for the discovery of leads against breast, lung and prostate cancer or leukemia.
