Shunts for hydrocephalus are medical devices used to treat a disease where fluid accumulates in the brain and causes a rise in intracranial pressure. It is frequently offered in variations with catheters, adjustable pressure valves, fixed pressure valves, and valves. It is a flexible tube inserted into the brain region responsible for producing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A hydrocephalus shunt consists of an outflow or distal catheter that passes under the skin and directs CSF, an inflow or proximal catheter that drains CSF from the lateral ventricles, and a valve mechanism that regulates intracranial pressure by controlling fluid flow. It helps to reduce stress on the brain and shrink the enlarged ventricles of the brain back to their normal size.
