An artificial embryo is created using various technologies in artificial settings with the assistance of stem cells. An artificial embryo, also called a blastoid, helps scientists study humans' development and understand infertility and pregnancy loss without experimenting on the actual embryos. These blastoids are made by mixing pluripotent stem cells with biochemical that can provide a medium for these cells to grow into three distinct cell lineages: the placenta, amniotic sac, and inner cell mass. It is a relatively new technology, with the first artificial embryo being created in 2016 using mouse stem cells. Creating artificial embryos was first performed by bioengineer Jianping Fu and biologist Deborah Gumucio.
