OHSAS 18001 Internal Auditor Training
OH&S management systems enable an organization to control its OH&S risks and improve its performance. Workers in factories face health and safety risks. Health and safety problems and hazards that workers face include the following:
Keeping this fact in mind, in 1970, (OSHA) was established as a comprehensive occupational safety and health law “to assure so far as possible for every working man and woman in the nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve human resources.” In addition, OHSAS 18001 specification and the accompanying OHSAS 18002 guidelines have been developed as audit standards to implement assuring the safety of employees in compliance with the requirements set out in OHSAS 18001 and OHSAS 18002.
OHSAS 18001/18002:
Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, published by the British Standards Institute. (BSI)
The scope of an OH&S management system, applicable to any organization, includes:
Plan – Do – Check – Act
Plan - Establish the objectives and processes needed to deliver the results (in line with the OHSMS).
Do - Implement the needed processes of the OHSMS.
Check - Check the processes against the policy, objectives, targets, regulations, and report the results. (Auditing)
Act - Take actions that will continually improve the OHSMS.
- Poor working conditions
- Exposure to toxic materials or chemicals
- Long working hours
- Work-induced stress
- Excessive noise levels
- Risks to life, eyes, and limb while working with machinery

- OHSAS 18001 specification gives requirements for an OHSMS
- OHSAS 18002 explains the requirements of the specification and shows you how to work toward implementation and registration.
- It is not an ISO standard, but integrates well with ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environment), and applies to any organization.
- OHSAS 18001 does not state specific occupational health and safety (OH&S) performance criteria. It sets a baseline and implements continuous improvement.
- Competent health & safety practices helps identify, eliminate or minimize injury, illness or disease in the workplace.
- Reduces the number and severity of injuries and claims by systematically and effectively managing OHS risk – often reducing costs.
- Gives a structured approach to managing OH&S
- Increased regulatory compliance
- Top management involvement
- Increased employee awareness & involvement
- Positive image with customers and other stakeholders

Read the procedure for the OH&S Policy in the Eco Toy Co Manual, section OHS-4.2
