About Kronos Worldwide Inc.
Kronos Worldwide, Inc. produces and markets titanium dioxide pigments primarily in North America and Europe. The company is a subsidiary of Valhi, Inc.
Products
The company produces approximately 40 different TiO2 grades, sold under the Kronos trademark. Its TiO2 is produced in two crystalline forms: rutile and anatase. Rutile TiO2 is manufactured using both a chloride production process and a sulfate production process, whereas anatase TiO2 is produced using a sulfate production process. TiO2 is an inorganic pigment used to impart whiteness, brightness and opacity for products such as coatings, plastics, paper, fibers, food, ceramics, and cosmetics.
Other Products
The company owns and operates an ilmenite mine in Norway pursuant to a governmental concession. Ilmenite is a raw material used directly as a feedstock by sulfate-process TiO2 plants, including its European sulfate-process plants. The company also sells ilmenite ore to third-parties.
The company manufactures and sells iron-based chemicals, which are co-products and processed co-products of the TiO2 pigment production process. These co-product chemicals are marketed through its Ecochem division, and are used primarily as treatment and conditioning agents for industrial effluents and municipal wastewater, as well as in the manufacture of iron pigments, cement and agricultural products.
The company manufactures and sells titanium oxychloride and titanyl sulfate, which are side-stream products from the production of TiO2. Titanium oxychloride is used in specialty applications in the formulation of pearlescent pigments, production of electroceramic capacitors for cell phones and other electronic devices. Titanyl sulfate products are used primarily in pearlescent pigments, natural gas pipe, and other specialty applications.
TiO2 manufacturing joint venture
The company owns a 50% interest in Louisiana Pigment Company, L.P. (LPC). LPC is a manufacturing joint venture whose other 50%-owner is Tioxide Americas, Inc., which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Huntsman Holdings LLC. LPC owns and operates a chloride-process TiO2 plant in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
