Thermocouple The basic unit of a power sensor is a thermocouple. A single thermocouple unit consists of two metals connected in series, a thermocouple is a sensor used to measure temperature. Thermocouple power sensors work by absorbing incident laser radiation and converting it to heat, which then flows to a heat sink. The temperature difference between the absorber and heat sink is converted into an electrical signal through the thermocouple junction. Unlike semiconductor sensors, thermocouple power sensors do not saturate and have high power capability and flat spectral response.
