Semiconductor wafer sorters are cleanroom automation systems that connect wafer manufacturing, inspection, logistics, and carrier management. Typical applications cover 300mm volume fabs, 200mm specialty lines, power semiconductors, MEMS, glass and thin-wafer handling, and front-end or back-end transfer steps in advanced packaging. Major customers include foundries, IDMs, OSATs, equipment integrators, and pilot or R&D lines. Commercially, these systems are usually sold as capital equipment and are supplemented by software interface customization, factory automation integration, on-site system integration, spare parts, and maintenance services, making them a key equipment category in semiconductor factory material automation and lot control.

From the product perspective, wafer sorters are evolving from traditional single-station handling tools into critical nodes for lot control and material automation in semiconductor factories. Information disclosed on official supplier pages shows that the core capabilities of the industry have moved beyond simple pick-and-place transfer toward wafer identification, pre-alignment, slot mapping, lot splitting and merging, carrier changeover, exception checking, and host-linked control.
