In a neutral-atom quantum computer, atoms are suspended in ultra-high vacuum by tightly focused arrays of laser beams called optical tweezers. The researchers have scaled up to arrays of more than 100 base atoms, each with one valence electron, and used smaller arrays to perform quantum algorithms.In quantum computing, a quantum bit is the fundamental unit of quantum information. In a neutral atom quantum computer, the internal energy levels or states of a neutral atom act as quantum bits. These energy levels can represent binary states of 0 and 1, as well as superpositions of these states. Neutral atom quantum computers require precise manipulation and control of individual atoms. Typically, electromagnetic fields are used to trap neutral atoms and cool them to very low temperatures so that they can be manipulated with high precision. Similar to other types of quantum computers, neutral atom quantum computers use quantum gates to manipulate quantum bits and perform quantum operations. Quantum gates are operations that change the state of the quantum bits and allow the execution of quantum algorithms. Like other quantum computing technologies, neutral atom quantum computers are susceptible to quantum decoherence and errors due to their interactions with the environment. Error correction techniques are being developed to mitigate these problems and improve the reliability of quantum computing. Neutral atom quantum computers have the potential to solve certain complex problems more efficiently than classical computers. They could have applications in fields such as cryptography, optimisation, materials science and quantum system simulation.
