By implementation, it may be categorized as discrete/modular, monolithic, or PLL-integrated; by resonator structure, it may be LC, microstrip, or other specialized forms. Its primary value is to provide frequency synthesis and local-oscillator paths with predictable tuning linearity, low phase noise, and controllable Kvco, supporting loop design, frequency sweeping, and calibration in communications, satellite links, test equipment, aerospace, radar, industrial electronics, and selected automotive millimeter-wave systems.
