A Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) is a magnetic storage technology used in hard disk drives (HDDs) to increase data storage density. It utilizes a combination of heat and magnetic fields to enable the recording of smaller, densely packed magnetic bits on the disk surface. In HAMR technology, a laser is used to heat a tiny portion of the disk's magnetic recording medium, known as the recording media. This localized heating makes the media easier to magnetize, allowing for the creation of smaller and more stable magnetic bits. The heated region can retain its magnetization even after the laser is turned off, resulting in high-density storage. By using HAMR, HDD manufacturers can achieve larger storage capacities without significantly increasing the physical size of the drives. This technology paves the way for higher-capacity hard drives and plays a vital role in meeting the ever-growing demand for data storage.
