Deep packet inspection (DPI) is a form of filtering used to inspect data packets sent from one computer to another over a network. DPI is a sophisticated method of packet filtering that operates at the seventh layer (the application layer) of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model. The effective use of DPI enables its users to track down, identify, categorize, reroute or stop packets with undesirable code or data. DPI is normally more effective than typical packet filtering, which inspects only the packet headers. DPI inspects the packet's data part (and sometimes the packet header) when it goes over an inspection point, attempting to find protocol noncompliance, intrusions, spam, viruses or other predefined factors to determine whether the packet can pass or whether it must be directed to another location. With DPI, organizations can boost their network management systems without investing heavily in core network technologies. Deep packet inspection is also known as complete packet inspection and information extraction.As an important technical means for network traffic identification and security protection, deep packet inspection (DPI) has evolved from early simple traffic monitoring to an intelligent and refined core network management tool. At present, DPI is mainly divided into two categories: independent DPI devices and integrated DPI modules. The former is deployed as a separate hardware at the network boundary or key nodes, with powerful processing capabilities and flexibility, suitable for high-security demand scenarios; while the latter is embedded in network devices such as firewalls, load balancers, and routers, and is more suitable for the integrated application of basic DPI capabilities in cost-sensitive environments. From the perspective of application areas, government departments rely on DPI to achieve information review and national network security; Internet service providers (ISPs) use DPI to optimize traffic management and content auditing; enterprises use DPI to monitor internal data flow and prevent data leakage; the education industry uses DPI to control access behavior and ensure the order of teaching networks; and other fields such as finance and medical care are gradually incorporating DPI into their network security architecture.The main manufacturers in the global deep packet inspection (DPI) market include Cisco Systems, International Business Machine (IBM), Intel and other companies.
