China has emerged as economic powerhouse in the past 20 years on the strength of its manufacturing capabilities and now the country is making the transition from a manufacturing-driven to an innovation-driven economy. To spearhead this move, the state is initiating research initiatives to develop and attract skilled personnel and the requisite talent. Robotics in China’s manufacturing sector is here to stay, given that the salaries of factory workers are rapidly rising salaries of factory workers are making Chinese manufacturing less cost effective. As a result the country is expected to lose up to xx million manufacturing jobs to other countries in the region. The country is losing its advantage as a low cost manufacturer China due to competition from cheaper countries such as Vietnam or Mexico, and this necessitates more use of robotics to maintain competitiveness. Given the peculiar demographics of the country this is likely to be the trend for the future.

Besides, as part of a long term plan, China is focusing on moving away from its manufacturing competitiveness and focusing on making its people better educated. To this end the country is investing significantly in the education system so that its people move away from low value-added labor towards value added employment. This does not mean that there will be no more low end manufacturing but implies the need to use robots at the lower end of the manufacturing sector for repetitive, non-value adding tasks.

Given the high population in the country and the need for higher productivity in the manufacturing process, more industrial workers in the form of robots would be needed. This is more so since China as part of industrial transformation has laid out its path to gradually change from labor-intensive style to a more sustainable and innovative development. Robots have an important role in the transition process, while ensuring that in the process Chinese enterprises do not lose their cost advantage and maintain their efficiency and competitiveness.

Different industry sectors are warming up to the benefits and uses of robotics in their manufacturing processes. While the electronics industry and the automobile industry have pioneers in China in the use of robots over the years, more and more industries have also started to employ robots for various jobs--the chemical, rubber, plastics and the food industry. Robots designed in the country are limited but they are being used in automanufacturing, electronics, logistics and aero-technology and there is scope and potential for their increased use.
