Both PV (pervaporation membrane) and VP (vapor permeation membrane) belong to the "membrane separation" material and component system, used to achieve selective separation of target components in gas/vapor or liquid mixtures without introducing high-energy-consuming phase change separation processes like traditional distillation. Pervaporation membranes (PV) use liquid mixtures as feed, where components selectively dissolve and diffuse within the membrane. A low partial pressure is maintained on the permeate side (vacuum or carrier gas purging) to allow the permeate to be carried out as vapor and condensed for recovery. Typical applications include dehydration of organic systems such as alcohols/esters, separation of azeotropic/near-boiling systems, and fine separation and process intensification of aromatic/alkanes or organic/water systems. Vapor permeation membranes (VP) typically handle feeds that are predominantly vapor or gas. They achieve selective permeation by exploiting differences in the dissolution-diffusion rates of different molecules, and are commonly used for organic solvent vapor recovery, process tail gas purification, dehumidification, and removal of trace impurities from gases.

PV (pervaporation) and VP (vapor permeation) membranes are typically produced in a "three-stage" model: Selective-layer fabrication—polymeric suppliers (e.g., PVA, PI, PDMS, PEBA) often use dope preparation, casting/phase inversion, crosslinking, hollow-fiber spinning, and composite coating; inorganic routes (zeolite/ceramic) focus on support forming, seeding/hydrothermal growth, calcination, and defect healing. Module standardization—membranes are packaged into spiral-wound, plate-and-frame, tubular, or hollow-fiber modules with validated sealing, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. System integration—vacuum or sweep-gas design, condensation/recovery, pretreatment, and controls are configured into skid systems, supported by membrane replacement and O&M services. Gross margins generally rise with value-added along the chain: membrane materials and standard modules ~25%–55%, potentially higher for proprietary chemistries/structures; turnkey skid systems and project delivery ~20%–45%, depending on customization and procurement volatility. Upstream includes polymers/monomers, solvents/additives, reinforcements (nonwovens/scrims), ceramic/alumina supports and zeolite precursors, plus vacuum, heat-exchange, condensation, and instrumentation components. Midstream covers membrane making, module assembly, and performance QA. Downstream demand concentrates in bioethanol and solvent dehydration, azeotrope/close-boiling separations, specialty chemicals and pharma, petrochemicals and VOC recovery, electronic chemicals and high-purity solvents, and flavors/fragrances, with recurring revenues driven by consumable membrane replacement and service contracts.
