Distilled tall oil, tall oil rosin, tall oil fatty acids, pitch are among main derivatives of commercially important co-product of Kraft pulping – tall oil. Pulp and paper industry companies (pulp mills) are the main suppliers of products. Tall oil is obtained as byproduct in the treatment of pine pulp and further distilled or fractioned into derivatives.

Regions with numerous coniferous forests like North Europe and North America are major manufacturers of tall oil and derivatives. USA, Finland and Sweden provide about 70% of world export. Arizona Chemical, Georgia-Pacific Resins Inc., UPM are the leading companies in tall oil and derivatives market.

Tall oil and products find a lot of uses in various industries and some of them are quite beneficial. E.g. tall oil fatty acid is an alternative to tallow fatty acid in soap applications or tall oil derivatives demonstrate potential use as biofuel.
