Rice is the main food source of more than 50% of the world's population, providing 21% of energy and 15% of protein for humans. Among the five types of cereals, rice ranks first

In terms of nutritional value but compared to other types, the protein content of rice is not too high. In addition, rice also provides minerals, vitamins and fibers.

The rice production for the 2019/20 crop year is estimated at 496.1 million tons, down 3.3 million tons from the 2018/19 crop. The main reason for the decline in rice production is the situation drought, causing difficulties in farming and production in Southeast Asia (accounting for over 80% of world rice production). In Thailand, the expected drop in production is due to the decrease in off-season rice area because the reservoirs are so low that the government has restricted irrigation for rice production.
