The novel “The joy Luck Club” is a fictions story about the mothers that migrated from China and raised their daughters in contrast culture of America written by Amy Tan in 1989.

The novel focuses on the cultural encounter and how difficult it became for the mothers to raise their daughters because of cultural conflicts.

The 4 pairs of mothers and daughters are described, Suyuan and Jing-mea Woo; Lindo and Waverly; An-mei and Rose Hsu and Jordan with Ying and lina.

The essay will first describe how Amy tan has explained his encounter of culture by the concept of novel, and then the understanding of cultural encounter by the characters is explained.

After that it is elaborated that how the mah-jong explains the cultural differences and in what context the memoires of past were told by mothers and what impact they had on daughters that are brought up in different culture.
