It operates on the principle of creating a vacuum within a pipe network to move wastewater from individual fixtures to a collection point. Components include vacuum pumps, vacuum interface units at fixtures, a vacuum piping network, collection tanks, and a control system.

When a fixture (e.g., toilet) is used, a vacuum interface unit opens, and a vacuum is created in the connected piping network. The vacuum pressure moves the wastewater from the fixture to the local collection tank. Periodically, or as needed, the vacuum pumps at the vacuum station create suction, transporting the wastewater from the collection tanks to the central collection point or sewage treatment facility.
