Executive Summary

Needle coke is a high value, petroleum coke based raw material primarily used in the production of graphite electrodes for the electric arc furnaces (EAF) based steelmaking and lithium-ion batteries. Needle coke can take up to six months to convert coke into graphite electrodes, including baking and rebaking process. Needle coke is used in graphite electrodes because it reduces the risk of fractures by expanding along the length. The end-users of the needle coke are steel industry, lithium-ion battery industry, aluminium industry, aerospace, etc.

The qualities of the modern needle coke are low coefficient of thermal expansion, high aspect ratio, sufficient strength, low puffing, good density, low ash, low sulfur, low nitrogen, etc. The raw materials used for the needle coke production are petroleum Fluidised catalytic cracker decant oils (FCCDO), petroleum low-sulfur vacuum residues (LSVR), coal-tar pitches (CTP), ethylene tar pitches (ETP) and solvent refined coal (SRC).

Needle coke has a long history with continuously evolving environmental friendly needle coke. The needle coke market can be segmented on the basis of type, grade, application and end-users.

The global needle coke market has increased at a significant CAGR during the years 2013-2017 and projections are made that the market would rise in the next four years i.e. 2018-2022 tremendously. The needle coke market is expected to increase due to growth in global GDP, growing needle coke demand in graphite electrodes, rapid growth in electric vehicles production, growing needle coke demand in lithium-ion batteries, etc. Yet the market faces some challenges such as increasing graphite electrodes prices, increasing needle coke prices, slow steel production growth, decline in graphite electrodes capacity, environmental concerns, etc.
