The active Q-switched laser actively modulates the intracavity loss through a modulator. For example, an acousto-optic modulator is inserted in the cavity, and when RF power is applied, part of the light beam overflows the cavity through diffraction. After storing high energy in the laser medium, the RF power is suddenly turned off to form and output a laser pulse.

Actively Q-switched laser energy is continuously adjustable, while passively Q-switched laser energy is fixed.
