About NIOCAN Inc.
NIOCAN, Inc. (the company) was incorporated in 1995. The Company engages in exploration and development of niobium property in Oka, located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Montreal. The company converts the niobium output into ferroniobium products. The Oka ore contains other additional minerals in the form of apatite, magnetite, calcite, and rare earths.
The Niocan project was initiated in 1994 following acquisition of rights from Kennecott Canada, which owned the Quebec Columbium property. Annual ore production at the mine will be approximately 892, 000 tonnes at 0.63% Nb2O5 grade.
A feasibility study, completed by the Met-Chem/SNC-Lavalin consortium, indicated a high rate of return from the two major deposits on the NIOCAN property, the S-60 and the HWM-2. In the long term, the company plans to recover the by-products in the ore deposits and produce ferroalloys, as well as other related products.
Acquisition of the St. Lawrence Site
On August 7, 2003, NIOCAN submitted an offer of purchase for a section of the site of the former St. Lawrence Columbium operations. The two open-pits are an essential component of the NIOCAN project. Forty-five percent of the tailings from the new plant will be stored on that site, while the remaining 55% will be returned underground and used as backfill.
James Bay Niobium Property
The Company has signed an agreement with Barrick Gold Corp., James Bay Columbium and Exall Resources. NIOCAN transferred 100% of the mining rights to a niobium property, located some 50 km south of Moosonee. This property is held under a mining lease. This included 85 exploratory drill holes totaling 47,675 feet and the sinking of a shaft allowing the extraction of a 250 ton bulk sample to run a concentration pilot test.
