Even though Armenia has only one operating nuclear reactor, this unit supplied nearly 30% of the total electricity produced in recent years. Electricity consumption per capita in Armenia is about 2400 kWh/yr. Natural gas, which is imported from Russia, is the country’s main source of primary energy.

In 2003, Armenia turned over financial control of Metsamor to Russia's state-owned power monopoly, Unified Energy Systems, in accordance with a swap agreement that settled the plant's $40 million debt to Russian nuclear fuel suppliers.
