The company operates nine underground mining complexes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia. It is constructing a new mining complex in West Virginia, and the company also operates a coal loading terminal on the Ohio River at Mt. Vernon, Indiana. The company’s mining activities are conducted in three geographic regions commonly referred to in the coal industry as the Illinois Basin, Central Appalachian and Northern Appalachian regions. As of December 31, 2009, the company had approximately 647.2 million tons of coal reserves in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Illinois Basin Operations

The company’s Illinois Basin mining operations are located in western Kentucky, southern Illinois and southern Indiana. It operates six mining complexes in the Illinois Basin.
