Alliance Holdings GP, L.P., through its subsidiaries, produces and markets coal primarily to utilities and industrial users in the United States. It produces a range of steam coal with varying sulfur and heat contents. Alliance GP, LLC, serves as the general partner of the company. The company's principal subsidiaries include Alliance Resource Management GP, LLC and Alliance Resource Partners, L.P. (ARLP Partnership).

As of December 31, 2009, the ARLP Partnership had approximately 647.2 million tons of coal reserves in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The ARLP Partnership operates nine underground mining complexes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia. The ARLP Partnership’s mining activities are conducted in three geographic regions referred to in the coal industry as the Illinois Basin, Central Appalachian, and Northern Appalachian regions.

Mining Operations

Illinois Basin Operations

The ARLP Partnership’s Illinois Basin mining operations are located in western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southern Indiana. The ARLP Partnership operates six mining complexes in the Illinois Basin.

Dotiki Complex: The ARLP Partnership’s subsidiary, Webster County Coal, LLC (Webster County Coal), operates Dotiki, which is an underground mining complex located near the city of Providence in Webster County, Kentucky. The Dotiki complex produces high-sulfur coal. Dotiki’s preparation plant has throughput capacity of 1,300 tons of raw coal an hour.

Warrior Complex: The ARLP Partnership’s subsidiary, Warrior Coal, LLC (Warrior), operates an underground mining complex located near the city of Madisonville in Hopkins County, Kentucky. Warrior produces high-sulfur coal. Warrior’s new preparation plant has the throughput capacity of 1,200 tons of raw coal an hour.

Pattiki Complex: The ARLP Partnership’s subsidiary, White County Coal, LLC (White County Coal), operates Pattiki, an underground mining complex located near the city of Carmi in White County, Illinois. The Pattiki complex produces high-sulfur coal. The preparation plant has throughput capacity of 1,000 tons of raw coal an hour.

Hopkins Complex: The Hopkins complex is located near the city of Madisonville in Hopkins County, Kentucky. Hopkins produces high-sulfur coal. Hopkins County Coal’s preparation plant has throughput capacity of 1,200 tons of raw coal an hour.

Gibson Complex: The ARLP Partnership’s subsidiary, Gibson County Coal, LLC (Gibson County Coal), operates the Gibson mine, an underground mining complex located near the city of Princeton in Gibson County, Indiana. The mine produces medium-sulfur coal. The preparation plant has throughput capacity of 700 tons of raw coal an hour.

River View Complex: The company's subsidiary, River View Coal, LLC, controls, through coal leases or direct ownership, approximately 120.8 million tons of probable high-sulfur coal in the Kentucky No. 7, No. 9, and No. 11 coal seams underlying properties located primarily in Union County, Kentucky, as well as certain surface properties, facilities, and permits. River View is an underground mining complex, which would have the capability of annually producing approximately 6.4 million tons. River View’s preparation plant has throughput capacity of 1,800 tons of raw coal per hour.

Gibson South Reserves: The ARLP Partnership has partially completed the permitting process for the Gibson South reserves and evaluating the development of the project.

Central Appalachian Operations

The ARLP Partnership’s Central Appalachian mining operations are located in eastern Kentucky. The ARLP Partnership operates two mining complexes in central Appalachia.

Pontiki Complex: The Pontiki complex is located near the city of Inez in Martin County, Kentucky. Its subsidiary, Pontiki Coal, LLC (Pontiki), owns the mining complex and controls the reserves, and its subsidiary, Excel Mining, LLC (Excel), conducts mining operations. The Pontiki complex produces low-sulfur coal. The preparation plant has throughput capacity of 900 tons of raw coal an hour.

MC Mining Complex: The MC Mining complex is located near the city of Pi
