Central Glass Co., Ltd. engages in the manufacture and sale of glass and chemical products. It offers flat glass, processed glass, building materials and other glass products; soda, chlorine, organic and inorganic fluorine compounds, fertilizers and other chemical products; glass fiber products; synthetic resins. The company has 69 subsidiaries and affiliates, 10 of which are located worldwide. The company operates in two business segments that include glass and chemicals.


The company’s glass business segment includes architectural glass, automotive glass, and fine glass for IT-related industries.

Architectural Glass

The company’s sheet glass and processed glass products for architectural use are manufactured domestically at three plants. Northwestern Industries, Inc. of Seattle, Washington manufactures processed glass for architectural use; while in China, Beijing Sanchong Mirror Co., Ltd. makes and sells mirror products.

Architectural glass products are divided into various categories: float glass, polished wired glass made with its Duplex method, figured glass (including figured wired glass) made with the roll-out method. These basic types of glass are further processed into value-added products offering heat-insulation and heat-shielding properties, design appeal, and added safety features. It also offers float glass, polished wired glass, and figured glass. The company’s insulating glass unit, which offers superior energy conservation performance, has hitherto made inroads mainly in the market for detached houses, it has also come to be increasingly used in multistory commercial buildings, as well as in condominium or rental apartment buildings.

Automotive Glass

The company’s glass used for automotive glass is produced domestically at its Matsuzaka Plant. It is manufactured by the U.S. subsidiary Carlex Glass Company; and in Taiwan by Yue Sheng Industrial Co., Ltd. The company offers processed glass that meets the needs of automakers. It also offers water-repellent glass, UV-cut glass, heat-insulating glass, antenna glass, and anti-fogging glass.

Fine Glass

The company’s main products in the fine glass category include thin sheet glass, polished glass, glass with transparent electric conductive film for use in TN-type and STN-type liquid crystal displays, and chromium-coated glass used in the substrates of TFT-LCD color filters. These products are used as substrates for LCDs employed in electronic appliances, including cell phones, PDAs, notebook PCs, and LCD TVs. The company established a sales company, Central Glass Taiwan Trading Co., Ltd. in 2002.


The company’s chemical business includes basic chemicals, fertilizers, glass fibers, and fine chemicals for pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates and the IT-related industries.

In the Company’s chemicals business, in addition to soda ash, which serves as an important raw material for sheet glass and other glass products, as well as soap and other detergents, it also produces calcium chloride, which is an antifreeze agent; poly-aluminum chloride, a flocculant used in water treatment; caustic soda; hydrofluoric acid; the alternative chlorofluorocarbon HCFC-141b, and other basic chemical materials employed in a variety of industries.


The company’s wholly owned subsidiary Central Kasei Chemical Co., Ltd. handles the production of fertilizer. The company produces ammonium chloride in simple, non-compound form as a nitrogenous fertilizer, mainly for rice cultivation, and also sells it in compound form. It supplies a compound fertilizer containing ammonium chloride, phosphoric acid, and potassium chloride. The company also sells NK fertilizer, a mixture of ammonium chloride and potassium chloride. These products are sold via agricultural cooperatives throughout Japan.

The company also supplies ammonium phosphate and liquid phosphoric acid to fertilizer manufacturers nationwide. Since 1987, it has been selling Cera-coat, a controlled-release fertilizer.
